We’ve all seen the trend.
Celebrities and famous makeup artists creating their own makeup brands, and further capitalising on their fame. Most popularly being Kylie Cosmetics and Fenty Beauty’s lines. The two lines, along with many others have become very successful, and are overshadowing older, seemingly more reliable brands. Lady Gaga’s brand new Haus Labs company recently came out, and had a launch party inviting celebrities, and makeup artists, (like many other high end brands do). The company will be the first brand to sell their products exclusively on Amazon, the world's most trafficked shopping site. You can also purchase the newly released products on her website , which offers the same products as the ones on Amazon. Her new, and featured product, the “Liquid Eye-Lie-Ner” is marketed on Amazon as, “HAUS LABORATORIES by Lady Gaga: LIQUID EYE-LIE-NER, Black Felt-Tip Liquid Eyeliner”. It retails for $20, the same price as most high end eyeliners on the market, such as Fenty beauty’s line, Kat Von D, and Tarte’s. Based on the price, it places the brand on the spectrum of being a reasonable, but definitely high end makeup line. Paper magazine did a review on the Eye-Lie-Ner saying, “It's able to deliver a desired opaque, jet-black matte line from the get-go”. The article also talks about how it’s easy to use, and how the tip and structure of the pen is well thought out. I love liquid pen eyeliner’s, drugstore and high end alike, and although the market is flushed with many brands and there different liners, there is still room for new variations. Lady Gaga’s makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, who created the logistics of the actual products, made them easy and accessible for all levels of expertise. Tano said, "We've always been people that try to break the mold, set the trend, and be on our own. I think there's so much out there, but what sets us apart is not just our messaging but the artistry in us. We're not just going to be pushing, but also sharing with the world. It's really inspiring for me." Paper magazine. Her knowledge, and long time career as a makeup artist, mixed with Lady Gaga’s extreme vision has created a brand that we will not soon forget. Haus Labs has also gotten a lot of attention from beauty gurus who attended Gaga’s event. Desi Perkins melted in Gaga’s presence, and talked about how her energy just rubbed off on her. She, as well as other internet stars, said how meeting her was so impactful, and life changing. The launch has been reviewed by many Youtuber’s ranging from famous to unknown. NikkieTutorials, a very successful makeup artist on youtube with 12 million followers gave a passionate and thorough review. She created a look with all the products and kept her comments positive and said that every single product is good quality. Haus Labs is making a name for itself in the beauty community, and on Amazon. Its reputation only has to live up to the star behind it, Lady Gaga. As consumers, we will expect as much creativity as she has put into her music and art performances. We are growing in diversity in the makeup world, and we could all use a little more punk in our daily routines. There is a documentary on Netflix called “Period. End of sentence.”, where it shows the culture of living in India as a women, and stigmas that surround them and their religion. This documentary talks about how having a period is not talked about, and seen as unclean. The women were not allowed to worship their gods during their time on their period, and don’t use period products.
This old way of thinking and treating women surprised me, not because of the stigma, but because of the era the stigma lives in. We are living in a world where people still don’t have some freedoms we are so used to and take advantage of. Another documentary surrounding the same idea of not caring for a women’s needs makes me realize how unfair what our world can be. These problems are sadly hundreds of years old, and we think we have advanced? No, we just have added technology to our problematic world. Societies value quiet people, and praise those who do and think quietly. We still exist in a classist world, and sadly even a sexist one. I as a women assume I have, and will have the same opportunities as my make counterparts, but maybe that’s not true. Especially someone with less privilege, or were born in a situation they can’t control. Sometimes we judge people for their actions or decisions, but we don’t know what situation they were born into, or what they’ve experienced. We all try not to be racist or sexist, but we all are guilty of judging people, even for being rich. Being a pharisee has always been prevalent in any society, but in some ways it’s even harsher today. New and exciting places, always makes me appreciate home. But traveling gave me a new insight into how the world functions, and how different people interact differently with each other around the world. Being stuck in the American bubble can keep us unaware, and unconscious of the peoples and lives different to our own.
This was my first time in Europe, my first time in different countries where I didn't understand the language or social cues. I became jealous of the social network that I was experiencing in their society where family, and friendship is number one. America is known as a place to grow yourself; where capitalism is applauded, and individualism is accepted. We coined the terms "me time", and "self help", and our self involved culture, and advertising reflects that. I experienced spending real time with my classmates, with no intrest of my personal gain, like in a University classroom, I found that being out of America makes you self aware. Aware of others, the way they act and treat eachother. One interesting thing I noticed in my time in Europe were homeless people, and how they acted differently from the american homeless population. They would bow on the ground, heads down, hands up, and humbly wait for people to pity them. While in Los Angeles our homeless population is seen as rowdy and scary, a burden to society. They beg at the entrances of highways, come up to your car, they try and scam us, instead of letting us pity them. While homelesness is a problem all over the world, the way I interacted with them in Spain was so much safer, and I would be more inclined to give them food or money. It caused me to be more attracted to people who are not as self centered, and that love and family is more important then capitolism and fame. i. |
