There is a documentary on Netflix called “Period. End of sentence.”, where it shows the culture of living in India as a women, and stigmas that surround them and their religion. This documentary talks about how having a period is not talked about, and seen as unclean. The women were not allowed to worship their gods during their time on their period, and don’t use period products.
This old way of thinking and treating women surprised me, not because of the stigma, but because of the era the stigma lives in. We are living in a world where people still don’t have some freedoms we are so used to and take advantage of. Another documentary surrounding the same idea of not caring for a women’s needs makes me realize how unfair what our world can be. These problems are sadly hundreds of years old, and we think we have advanced? No, we just have added technology to our problematic world. Societies value quiet people, and praise those who do and think quietly. We still exist in a classist world, and sadly even a sexist one. I as a women assume I have, and will have the same opportunities as my make counterparts, but maybe that’s not true. Especially someone with less privilege, or were born in a situation they can’t control. Sometimes we judge people for their actions or decisions, but we don’t know what situation they were born into, or what they’ve experienced. We all try not to be racist or sexist, but we all are guilty of judging people, even for being rich. Being a pharisee has always been prevalent in any society, but in some ways it’s even harsher today.
